Everyone knows that my sweet babies are half Colombian. So learning Spanish is always an important part of their schooling. Not only do I think it’s important to keep their heritage alive in them, but also they have used their Spanish so much when talking to others in different places! Like when we visited Peru.
Some times, it can get difficult. The boys resist or I get lazy about practicing with them. Then there is the times when we are in a country that doesn’t speak english or Spanish! We try so hard to build relationships with the locals but then I am not sure which language to push more. So I just end up going with english.
At the end, I know it will be well worth the effort and the extra work. The benefits of learning a second language at an early age are huge! Not only for their development but also for them to have better opportunities later in life.
Learning Spanish: colors and shapes
For this fun activity, we used these flashcards from our friends at Kindergarten Toolkit. First we took turns saying them out loud and then, we played a little memory game with them.
We put all the cards with the shapes facing up, and whoever could tell both the color and the shape in Spanish correctly, would collect the card for the hands on fun!
After that we used these colorful pipe cleaners to create the shape by using the card as a guide. Once their shape was made, they would show it to me and shout out the color and the shape in Spanish.
I know it seems a bit repetitive, but guess what? That’s the best way to learn new Spanish words! And the speed factor made things so much fun! They giggled and giggled non stop!
As an added bonus is the exercise of their motor skills while manipulating the pipe cleaners. It’s a fun way to have a fun and well rounded learning activity while learning Spanish too.
I hope you feel encouraged to introduce a second language to your littles! Even the simplest things can help in such a big way!
